Don't Damage That Top: Proper Care Instructions For Convertible Tops

Posted on: 19 April 2015

Although the top on your convertible is likely to spend more time down than up during nice weather, it's still essential that you take proper care of it all year. After all, the more thoroughly you care for your convertible top, the longer it is likely to last for you. Here are some tips to help you care for your convertible car top and keep it in good condition.

Stocking Up on Supplies

When you buy your first convertible, you should also create a convertible top care kit. This should include all of the necessary supplies to take care of your car's top. Look for one that's biodegradable and doesn't contain any bleaching agents. Bleaching agents can deteriorate the threads and may strip the vinyl of its necessary ultra-violet protection.

You'll also want to choose a vinyl window cleaner to take care of the vinyl windows. If you have a glass rear window, add some glass cleaner and paper towels as well. Get a few soft sponges and a soft-bristled brush to help you gently clean the surfaces. Finally, you'll want a convertible top protectant that you can apply after cleaning to seal it.

Cleaning the Top

Clean the top at least a couple of times a year, or more often if it is visibly dirty. Park the car in the shade and make sure that it is cool to the touch before you get started. Then, wet the top with a light spray from the hose until it's wet evenly across. Then, spray the convertible top cleaner evenly across the surface of the top.

Work the cleaner into the top using a soft sponge or soft-bristled brush. If there are any stubborn dirt spots, the brush may be the best way to break those loose. Then, once you've cleaned the whole top, rinse it thoroughly with the hose. You'll want to use the soft-bristled brush to help clear away the cleaner while you're running the water over the top. Treat the whole top with a protective sealant after each thorough cleaning. This sealant will protect the top from drying, cracking and sun damage. Let the top dry completely before you fold it down again, otherwise you risk mold growth from the residual moisture.

Cleaning the Windows

For tops with a glass rear window, use glass cleaner and paper towels to clean the window. Do not use glass cleaner on any vinyl windows, though. Clean the vinyl windows with a cleaner specifically made for them. Vinyl window cleaners are designed to keep the window clean without discoloring or scratching it.

With these tips, you can keep your convertible top looking like new long after you've rolled off the car lot. To learn more, contact Fred's Auto Interiors
